Macedonia

It never feels good to be forgotten. But unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening!

The news headlines used to be dominated by the refugee crisis, arguably one of the worst humanitarian emergencies of our time, however the crisis seems to have passed by and it’s rarely mentioned in the news. But there are still thousands of refugees, mostly Afghans fleeing the Taliban, who’ve are stuck in camps on the borders of Macedonia, Serbia, and Greece, surrounded by barbed wire!

There are still needs and you can help!

This past March, Reign Ministries, in partnership with SEND International, sent a team to work inside a refugee camp situated on the border of Macedonia and Serbia. The trip was a huge success and we’ve been asked to send another team!

Situated in the heart of the Balkans, Macedonia is one of the main thoroughfares refugees are taking as they travel from Greece into northern Europe, and the need there is great. Working out of Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia, you’ll have a variety of creative and unique opportunities to share the Gospel as you help meet some of the practical needs these people have on their journey.

The focus of our previous trip in March was on food distribution and providing supplies to young mothers and their children. Those needs have been met, and now there is a new challenge.

You will be working directly with refugees at the camp located on the border of Macedonia and Serbia, building relationships with adults, teenagers, and children, through one-on-one conversations, clothes distribution, and games, etc. You will also be working at a shelter for refugees who are unaccompanied minors and in another location with those seeking asylum. Additionally, God is opening doors for the team to begin an educational project teaching conversational English at the camp! We believe this exciting platform for serving will help us build deeper relationships and will provide a natural opportunity to share the hope we have in Christ. The work you’ll be doing will be significant as the refugees look to improve their English skills and their hope for a better future.

What makes Balkan cuisine unique is its surprising blend of exotic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. With Macedonia’s relatively warm climate, the soil makes for the perfect conditions to grow fresh fruits, herbs, and a variety of vegetables, which might explain why their stews are so mouthwatering and delicious. And thanks to the former Ottoman Empire, Macedonia has a well-developed coffee culture that could rival Starbucks any day!

Skopje is among Europe’s most beautiful and stylistic small capital cities. You and the team will be staying in fully furnished apartments situated in the heart of the city. You’ll only be minutes, by foot, from the main square, the National Parliament buildings, and St. Kliment Cathedral. Cross the bridge over the Vardar River, and you’ll be in the old city and the main shopping and market areas.

who should go?

The Macedonia Response Team II is designed for participants ages 16-30. If you are itching to do something about the crisis, then this is the trip for you. What an amazing opportunity to be able to represent Christ and meet the needs of such a marginalized people. You don’t have to passively hear about this from the news, you can actually jump in and make a tangible difference. This trip is for doers and difference makers. How often do we have the chance to help change the world right in the midst of an emergency that the whole world is watching from a distance?

logistics & cost

The dates of the trip are July 5th-20th.

The cost of the mission trip is $1550.00.

This covers food, lodging, and ground transportation once the team arrives in Chicago, as well as Training Camp. The cost DOES NOT include the international flight. For the booking the international flight you have 2 options. You can book one of the tickets that we are currently holding tickets through John Gossen at Bursch Travel (763.295.5551) which cost around$1525.00 via United and Austria Air (prices may fluctuate based on the timing of scheduling and what the airlines are willing to negotiate). Or you may book your international flight on your own (and be able to use your frequent flier miles). If you choose to make your international flight arrangements personally, you are required to contact Reign Ministries to get the parameters for arrival and departure times.

You need to arrive at Chicago O’Hare International airport by 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 5th. In most cases, leadership will meet you at your flight’s baggage claim. But in the event that multiple members arrive at the same time and they are unable to meet you, please go to O’Hare terminal 2, baggage claim 2, where a team representative will be waiting.

On July 20th, at the end of the mission trip, the team will return to Chicago O’Hare International airport where you will be released to either fly home or get picked up.

Reign Ministries is partnering with SEND International. SEND has missionaries living and working throughout Macedonia who are already well established and trusted in the culture. We have a golden opportunity to not only come alongside and encourage these hard working missionaries, but as the book of Hebrews says, to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

We had an amazing time in serving in this country and unfortunately this group trip is no longer available. If you're looking for group or individual mission trips, click below to visit our home page.
