Consider Sierra Leone with Royal Servants. Located in western Africa, Sierra Leone has a history of slavery, blood diamonds, brutal civil war, war crimes against humanity, and poverty.
Quick Facts
| Students: | June 26 to August 7, 2010 [6 weeks] | |
| Staff Disciplers: | June 19 to August 7, 2010 [7 weeks] |
The Sierra Leone mission trip is six weeks long (actually, 43 days). It is not for the faint of heart. It's hot, you'll walk a lot, and encounter extreme poverty and tragedy. But the people are among the warmest and friendliest you'll ever encounter. You will need to raise $4,095 plus your spending money and visa cost (see below).
The Heart of Your Ministry...
We will work with local Youth For Christ staff who are partnering with pastors, churches, and missionaries to strategically reach out in this predominately Muslim country. We will train you and give you opportunities to talk with people who live lives without Jesus. They are lost, hurting, and often hungry, lonely, and hopeless.
You will visit and develop relationships with people in the slums, schools, parks, detention centers, handicapped homes, and orphanages. Your ministry to present the Gospel will include performing dramas, dance, or puppets. There will be no shortage of children who want you to play games with and love on them or adults and teens who want to talk and get to know you. By listening to God and acting on His direction you can lend a helping and loving hand that will speak volumes to the Sierra Leoneans.
Sierra Leone was settled by former slaves from the United States and Canada. It was the first West African country to be evangelized, but after almost 200 years of effort it still remains 60 % Muslim and 25 % indigenous religions. You can deliver a message of life to people facing poverty and hopelessness. Give a summer of service, and be prepared for a lifetime of ministry.
Adventure...
Set on the west coast of Africa, Sierra Leone is a beautiful country but one of the poorest in the world! As you shop local markets for masks, djembes (African drums), bright clothes, or a goat (alright, maybe not a goat) you will help the local people support themselves. You will spend the last five nights of your trip in London, England as you debrief about your ministry and experience. From poor, dry, unorganized, and underdeveloped to rich, wet, highly organized, and overdeveloped, your time in London will be a great place to transition back into the western world. Visit the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. London has it all!
New Friends...
Your teammates will come from across North America. Ministering in tough conditions will bring you close together. You will learn how to rely on one another and will cement lasting friendships. You will do things together that you did not think you could do and then laugh about it that night. You will learn about each other and pray for one another with care and compassion. You will go home feeling like more than friends. You will leave feeling like family-guaranteed!
Spiritual Transformation...
The needs in Africa are so great; you will soon be aware of how little you have to offer. That is a great place to be, because it puts you in a place to depend on God and His power. You will learn if you are going to make a difference, He will have to do it through you.
Here's what one student said, "America is filled with people who go to church but whose lives may not really reflect Jesus. But in Sierra Leone, when you become a Christian your whole life changes! It was really amazing to see the change in people who received Christ. I saw the true joy that comes from knowing God, apart from circumstances and everything else in our lives. It challenged me to have that joy in my own life as I go back home."
On all of our mission trips your spiritual growth is a priority. When you immerse yourself in the Bible during your quiet times, share in your discipleship groups, memorize scripture, pray together, and worship together on a daily basis, you'll grow! That transformation will come full-circle as you share your faith, giving away to others what God is giving to you!
